Welcome Back!

MRV K-6th grade students are engaged with musical activities designed to help them experience and understand music in kinesthetic, auditory, cultural, and conceptual ways. With just one music class per week, we try to fit many activities into each class. These activities lead students to build the skills and understanding that can lead to a very meaningful life-long relationship with music. Our students are singing, dancing, and learning songs in Spanish. They are becoming musically literate by saying, reading, writing, and performing rhythms (takadimi, etc.). They are becoming literate with melody by learning to sing with solfege (Do, Re, Mi, etc.). This approach allows students to better identify notes and rhythms when they hear them, and write them with accuracy. Both of these skills are essential to composition, which is one of the goals for our older students as time may allow. We introduce much musical learning through the use of games, because having fun is a very serious musical goal!
